The School for the Environment (SFE) at the University of Massachusetts
Boston seeks an outstanding academic at the rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor in Urban Systems and Environmental Planning who will also serve
as Director of the School’s new graduate program in Urban Planning and
Community Development. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in Urban
Planning or a closely related field and a record of distinguished teaching,
research, and public service or practice, as well as experience in academic
program administration and interdepartmental collaboration. Highly
desirable are teaching and research interests in working with urban
communities. Also desirable are experience and knowledge in infrastructure,
sustainable community development, and urban resilience planning,
especially in coastal areas. Demonstrated success engaging with leaders of
government, business and civic organizations and a capacity for bridging
the fields of engineering, design, applied social sciences, public policy,
and the environmental/ecological sciences are sought. The successful
candidate will also be familiar with local governance, social justice and
public participation.

The selected candidate will serve as Director of the Master’s in Urban
Planning and Community Development, reporting to the Dean of the School for
the Environment. The Director will have the opportunity to guide a new
program, refine its vision, and be responsible for coordinating all
activities including program administration, student recruitment and
retention, faculty development and growth, curriculum design and
development, and development of partnerships to advance programmatic goals
in support of the University strategic plan as a means of advancing the
School’s research, teaching, and service programs.
