This is a new dissertation fellowship for social science students, focused on community-based research.
The Marilyn J. Gittell Dissertation Fellowship, established in honor of the late Political Science Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, is for a social science doctoral candidate working on areas that concerned Marilyn Gittell, especially research focused on cities, urban politics, public policy, democratic and civic engagement, social movements, citizenship and governance, and community practices, both domestically and abroad. Fellows will be expected to participate in seminars and activities sponsored by the Marilyn J. Gittell Endowed Chair in Urban Studies.
There will be 3 Gittell dissertation fellowships, processed via the Provost’s office, as per the forwarded message below.

Dear Level III GC Students:
The Graduate Center Dissertation Fellowship Deadline is Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 12:00pm. Attached are the complete application instructions and materials.
The Dissertation Fellowship Competition is open to level III Graduate Center doctoral students in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences (with the exception of Audiology, Nursing, and Public Health).
Applicants complete a brief portion of the application via student web and then upload their applications (cover sheet, proposal, cv, transcript) as a single Word or pdf document to the Dissertation Fellowship Dropbox. The link to this dropbox is included in the application instructions. A letter of reference must be provided by the applicant’s adviser. Reference letters can be uploaded by faculty members to the same dropbox (see instructions.)
The application consists of the following materials:
1. Cover sheet (attached in both word and writable pdf format)
2. Proposal
a.) 9-page project description including a 150-word abstract (the abstract should be single-spaced at the top of page one). The project description should include discussion of the background, relevant literature, methodology, data, projected results, and a time-line indicating expected progress. It should be in 12-point font, double-spaced.
b.) 1-page selected bibliography
3. Two-page curriculum vitae.
4. Current Graduate Center transcript. (Students may submit the unofficial student copy that can be printed from banner.)
5. One letter of reference to be submitted by your adviser
