Assistant Professor, Environmental/Physical Geography

The Department of Political Science and Geography at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Environmental/ Physical Geography with an emphasis on sustainability, climate change, resource use, and/or environmental policy. This position supports a new emphasis within the Geography program on environmental sustainability. More broadly, the position contributes to UTSA’s goal of achieving research and teaching excellence in sustainable communities and critical infrastructure, focusing specifically on low impact development, aspects of changing culture, climate change, and sustainable economic development. In developing grants and research projects, the successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to collaborate with such organizations as the Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute, the Water Institute of Texas, the Center for Water Research, the Center for Cultural Sustainability, and/or the Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. Applicants will be expected to teach courses on subjects such as Physical Geography, Conservation of Resources, Climatology, Climate Change, Urban Sustainability, and the Geography of Natural Hazards.

Required Qualifications: All applicants must have a Ph.D. in Geography or a directly related discipline. The Department is especially interested in attracting outstanding scholars with research and teaching expertise in environmental sustainability, low impact development, sustainable communities, climate change, and environmental policy.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with general or specialized knowledge of Lidar, ERDAS, GIS and/or similar programs.

All applicants must provide evidence of scholarly and professional publications commensurate with the rank of assistant professor. All applicants should also provide, if possible, some representative evidence of high-quality teaching – ideally in physical geography courses or courses relating to the environment, climate change, or sustainability.

Responsibilities: Teach, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; pursue an active research and publishing agenda; and serve the University, profession, and community.

Geography is growing in size and importance at UTSA, and our program, department, and university are committed to the emerging sub-field of environmental sustainability. It is impossible to ignore evidence for climate change and related topics in energy, drought, and sea level that surface in the pages of the New York Times on a daily basis. The new position for an Assistant Professor in Environmental/ Physical Geography (advertised below) will fill a void in these areas at UTSA. Salary will be competitive.
