3/9 #colloquium: Prof @dlindo_atichati of @csinews on #Oceangraphic control on #FishProductivity

David Lindo Atichati from Engineering Sci. & Physics, College of Staten Island – CUNY  on “Diagnosis of oceanographic controls on fish productivity in the South Atlantic Bight”   Areas of Interest My work, in conjunction with an international network of collaborators, grapples with questions at the frontiers of physics, biology, and chemistry in the oceanic systems. I approach these questions from a multidimensional perspective that includes theory, observation, and modeling. By weaving these three approaches together, my research program is specifically designed to understand the interactions between oceanic circulation, marine ecosystems, and marine pollutants. I rigorously test predictions of the models I use with observations collected …

3/2 #Colloquium: #EnergyProduction & #FishMigration in #AtlanticRivers w/ Prof #JohnWaldman

JOHN WALDMAN of  Biology, Queens College – CUNY  on “Maybe the Twain can meet: energy production and fish migrations on Atlantic rivers” Hydroelectric power is often touted as clean energy, but this claim is true only in the narrow sense of not causing air pollution. In many places, such as the U.S. East Coast, hydroelectric dams have damaged the ecological integrity of nearly every major river and have decimated runs of migratory fish. This need not continue. Our rivers can be liberated from their concrete shackles, while also continuing to produce electricity at the site of former hydropower dams. How might …
