Obituary for Jeffrey Steiner

It is with great sadness we report that Professor Jeffrey Steiner, Professor and Chair in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at City College and Professor in the Doctoral Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Graduate Center, passed away on Monday 28 April following a long battle against pancreatic cancer.  He was 70 years old.  A brilliant scientist, teacher, mentor, artist, and poet, Jeff was beloved by many across the Division of Science and the Grove School of Engineering at City, as well as by many among the faculty and students in EES.  He will be greatly missed. Ruth Wilson Gilmore Wins Harold M. Rose Award from AAG

  On January 22, the Association of American Geographers (AAG) announced Ruth Wilson Gilmore as the winner of the 2014 Harold M. Rose Award, which honors scholars who lead social change. The prestigious award recognizes Gilmore for work in antiracism research and practice. Gilmore is a professor of geography in the doctoral program in earth and environmental sciences at the Graduate Center, CUNY. She is known as an activist, whose wide-ranging research interests include race and gender, labor and social movements, economic geography, and the African diaspora.
