CUNY Demography Fellowship Opportunity
The CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR) awards Demography Fellowships to selected doctoral students (either domestic or foreign) at CUNY. The Fellowship provides full tuition (either in-state or out-of-state) and a stipend of $20,801 per year (with a step increase in out-years).1 It is expected that the student take the courses necessary to obtain a Certificate n Demography (three required courses – a survey course and two methods courses – and two electives), en route to the doctorate in your CUNY doctoral program, and select a demographically-oriented dissertation topic.
The Demography Fellowship is a Grad A type fellowship, for which one works 450 hours per academic year, or approximately 15 hours per week for each semester. The work requirement is met by participating in an apprenticeship with a mentor selected from one of CIDR’s many Faculty Associates.
Demography Fellows will be funded to attend the annual meetings of the Population Association of America in each year of their fellowship. Fellows are also expected to participate in the research seminar series held three times per semester.
Students employed under the terms of the Demography Fellowship are eligible for the NYSHIP health insurance plan for CUNY doctoral students. (Demography Fellows will be given information regarding the NYSHIP enrollment process when the respective payroll department processes their appointment in first year of their fellowship. The current 2017 year bi-weekly cost to the student for the NYSHIP health insurance coverage for individual coverage is $15.79 and $95.27 for a family.)
It is anticipated that up to two multi-year Fellowships will be awarded in academic year 2017- 2018. Incoming and continuing students are eligible to apply. At least one award will be made to a student interested in these areas of demography: urbanization, spatial methods, and climate change.
