3MUS-2017 “Urban Soils for Sustainable Cities”

May 18-21 2017, RUDN University, Moscow, Russia

General information 3MUS summer school is an annual event, organized as a joint initiative among RUDN University (Moscow, Russia), CUNY (New York City, USA) and USI (New York City, USA) to address relevant contemporary environmental consequences of urbanization and sustainable urban development. The summer school aims to provide a solid background and practical skills training in addressing impacts of urbanization through the monitoring and assessment of urban air, water, and soils, design and maintenance of urban green infrastructure, and other projects of sustainable urban development.

Duration and venue 3MUS will take place at the academic institutions of the organizing partners: in Russia and the USA, alternating the host country each year. The duration of the program is 4-7 days. This first year, 3MUS-2017 summer school will take place at RUDN university in Moscow May, 18 -21 2017. This will be followed by the 9th International SUITMA Congress.

Topic and format The 3MUS-2017 summer schools will focus on urban soils as a unique resource to provide important functions for human and environment and to support ecosystem services. The summer school will include lectures (L), seminars (S) and practices (P). The practice will involve field survey and in situ measurement, working in research laboratories and landscape architecture studios. Experts with different background, including but not limited to, environmental conservation, soil science, climate change, civil engineering and policy-making, will be invited to give lectures or seminars. Top-level researchers, landscape designers, policy makers and urban managers will share their experience in utilizing knowledge on urban soils to develop sustainable urban ecosystem. Participants will work in teams to propose solutions for specific problems, relevant for sustainable management of urban soils. The teams will come together to solve the overarching problem with the final presentation of the obtained results at the mini-conference and closing ceremony.

Participants This program targets Bachelors, Masters and PhD students, young researchers, and practioners, with backgrounds in urban ecology, urban agriculture, environmental remediation, landscape design and greening, nature conservation, land-use planning, urban planning, and sustainable development, and other related disciplines. The goal is to nurture a creative and integrative approach to develop nature-based solutions in urban management.

Conditions 3MUS-2017 summer school will host up to 50 international students. Students will be provided with accommodation at the university campus, lunch and coffee-breaks per day and all necessary material for courses. Visa support, including invitation letters, will be also provided by the organizers. The participation fee is 300 US dollar per person.

During May 22-26th 2017, RUDN University is hosting the largest biannual world congress on urban soils – SUITMA 9 (suitma-russia.com). This provides a unique opportunity to involve some of the best world experts in urban ecology and soils science as lecturers of the 3MUS summer school. 3MUS organizers, in collaboration with the SUITMA 9 organizing committee, propose a special fee offer: 600$ for participation in both 3MUS -2017 (May, 18-21) and SUITMA 9 (May, 22-26).
