The Upside of Meteorite Impacts

Meteorite impacts are widely recognized for their deleterious environmental effects, but nature is resilient. Perfectly preserved organic material from the target ecosystem is found inside of Darwin glass – once-molten droplets quenched after ejection from Darwin crater. This suggests that other impact glasses might be searched for snapshots of past ecosystems both here and on Mars. The study implies that impact glasses and tektites are viable mechanisms for the transport of biomarkers between planetary bodies.
