This roundtable conversation will engage contemporary methodological and theoretical questions on “the oceanic” within Black and postcolonial geographical imaginaries. From Paul Gilroy’s examiniation of the transnational political and cultural formations and circuits of the Black Atlantic to M. Jacqui Alexander’s (2006) argument that “water overflows with memory…emotional memory, bodily memory, sacred memory,” maritime metaphors and histories have figured centrally within the geographical imaginations of the Black diaspora and Black radical tradition. Thinking from and with the Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and Indian Ocean, panelists will consider oceanic crosscurrents as a site of theorization, earth-writing, and emancipatory politics.
