HORTICULTURE DEPARTMENT INTERN – SUMMER 2017

Battery Park City Authority manages and maintains Battery Park City, a vibrant model of urban planning. The Summer Internship Program offers students work experience and professional guidance in several areas of the organization. Interns contribute to projects that support departmental work, develop new skills, and gain insight into their career interests. JOB DESCRIPTION

The Horticulture department intern will assist in the development of a literature review on the organic management of urban soils and compost making.

  • Research and review all periodical materials related to urban soils and compost making.
  • Document and develop a library of such resources to be utilized by the Horticulture department for the professional development of its staff and ultimately to be used as a resource by the public and other professionals in the Horticulture field.
  • Create a report summarizing your findings of the literature review and prepare a presentation to discuss the same to the Horticulture department at the end of the internship.
  • Assist in an Urban Soil Roundtable Symposium.

Other work will include:

  • Assisting a gardener in performing general garden maintenance, including watering, weeding, cleaning and trash pickup, during the beginning of each day.
  • Assisting with compost making, compost tea brewing and applying of compost tea.
  • Assisting in the soil laboratory, data collection and organization.
  • Assisting in the creation and maintenance of data sets for compost making and in the soil laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have experience in the preparation of a literature review.
  • Graduate Student with a major in Environmental Science or such other similar major, with an enthusiasm for public sustainable horticulture.
  • Good organizational and communication skills; be reliable and punctual; have a strong interest in learning on the job; and work well both independently and with others.

  • Must be available from May – August and can work 37.5 hours per week.
