Course Description: This course examines the ethical and political dimensions of U.S. policies that aim to protect the environment, preserve the landscape and conserve our natural resources. It will focus on protected land policy in the United States, especially regarding national parks.
Questions will include: What is the political justification for environmental regulations? How have values influenced the advent of the Park system and its management regime? Why should we care about protected areas, and for whom do we establish them? Do non-human lives matter in wildlife management?
QualificationsPhD in geography with prior university teaching experience.
Responsibilities
- Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
- Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
- Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
- Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
- Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
- Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
- Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
- Providing department sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
