 The Sociology Department at Drexel University is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative postdoctoral scholar interested in energy technologies, labor, and the just transition from fossil fuel use to renewable energy. Required qualifications include a PhD and training in Sociology, Anthropology, or Science & Technology Studies (STS), or related fields and strong qualitative social science research and writing skills.

Candidates will work under the supervision of Dr. Diane Sicotte, Associate Professor of Sociology and Dr. Kelly Joyce, Professor of Sociology and the Center for Science, Technology & Society, to conduct original research about the expertise and views of labor union members and leaders, regarding natural gas energy infrastructure and renewable energy infrastructure. The project, and the postdoctoral fellow position, is funded by the National Science Foundation Award #1827464.

The postdoctoral fellow will prepare for and conduct and analyze qualitative research including field work at public union events and interviews with labor union members and leaders. The research will also include the collection and analysis of unions’ public materials (e.g., press releases, reports, public websites). We seek applicants with strong qualitative social science research and writing skills. Recent Ph.D.s in Sociology, Anthropology, STS and related fields are eligible.  Qualifications

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Sociology, Anthropology, STS or related fields and strong qualitative social science research and writing skills. Candidates must complete all requirements for the Ph.D. by September 1, 2019.

 Essential Functions

Preparing for, conducting, and analyzing qualitative research, including fieldwork and interviews; writing papers as lead or co-author and presenting results at conferences.

The initial 12-month appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on satisfactory performance. The postdoctoral Scholar will receive an annual salary of $40,000 and standard benefits, and is expected to be in residence for the fellowship. 

This fellowship continues Drexel’s investment in social sciences and its goal of creating a high profile Sociology department and Center for Science, Technology & Society. Environmental sociology is one of the research foci of Drexel’s Sociology department, and there is a growing cluster of faculty in this subfield. The Center for STS also has a focus on environmental issues with both students and faculty working in this area. The candidate will be fully integrated into department and center colloquia and works-in-progress presentations, and will be an important member of our community. The candidate will have the opportunity to work on conference presentations, write papers as lead or co-author with Drs. Sicotte and Joyce, and to connect with scholars across the Schools, Colleges, and Centers at Drexel.
