#EESPublishes: Prof #JeffreyBird of @QC_News on C&N #mineralization in fine #roots. @SpringerLink

Professor Jeffery Bird of Queens College co-authored a paper in Biogeochemistry entitled: Rapid fine root C and N mineralization in a northern temperate forest soil. Abstract:  While fine roots (≤2-mm diameter) are major suppliers of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) to northern temperate and boreal forest soils, our understanding of how long-term plant and N inputs affect fine root decomposition rates and the amount of root-derived organic matter (OM) stabilized in forest soils is incomplete. We examined the influence of long-term aboveground and/or belowground litter and inorganic N additions on mineralization and vertical transport of fine root-derived C and N during …

ESSPublishes: #NirKrakauer of @citycollegeNY in @MDPIOpenAccess on #EnsembleForecasts

Prof Nir Krakauer of City College published a paper entitled: Ensemble Forecasts: Probabilistic Seasonal Forecasts Based on a Model Ensemble.   Abstract: Ensembles of general circulation model (GCM) integrations yield predictions for meteorological conditions in future months. Such predictions have implicit uncertainty resulting from model structure, parameter uncertainty, and fundamental randomness in the physical system. In this work, we build probabilistic models for long-term forecasts that include the GCM ensemble values as inputs but incorporate statistical correction of GCM biases and different treatments of uncertainty. Specifically, we present, and evaluate against observations, several versions of a probabilistic forecast for gridded air …

#EESPublishes: Prof #MichaelPiasecki of @citycollegeNY on #WaterDataNetworks in @IWAPublishing

Professor Michael Piasecki of City College authored a paper in Journal of  Hydroinformatics entitled: Water data networks: foundations, technologies and systems, implementations, and uses. Introduction: At the time of this special issue, we are faced with an unprecedented increase in the volume of hydrological data. More hydrological data are being collected today than ever before, at faster rates, creating a veritable data deluge. Fueling this deluge are new approaches to data collection, including improved devices such as cheaper and more efficient sensors, as well as innovative strategies such as citizen participation in which data are gathered by the broader public. Apart from these enhanced …
