The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has a long tradition of scholarship in urban economics, especially the economics of housing, land use, and development policies. This scholarly tradition is interdisciplinary, heterogeneous, and socio-spatial. Its central concern is to cultivate knowledge that enhances the capabilities of cities and regions to plan and design socially equitable and ecologically sustainable development, in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Department is seeking to appoint a full-time, tenure-track faculty member, at the rank of assistant or associate professor, to teach and conduct research in urban economics and housing policy, with an emphasis on the United States. The ideal candidate will have a strong research profile in the economics of housing policy and land use. Additional scholarly work that includes research in social policy, urban inequality, poverty alleviation, public finance, or the assessment of urban development policies or projects and their implementation is also desirable. Candidates should be able to engage in team teaching with scholars and practitioners from different disciplinary backgrounds including urban design, real estate, architecture, civil engineering, law, and other social sciences. The person hired will be expected to teach professional degree candidates in city planning, as well as Ph.D. students within our program.

Basic qualifications include a Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree in urban planning, economics, finance, management, political science, public administration, public policy, or other related field with a proven commitment to research excellence and demonstrated scholarly potential. Applied work in the practice of housing development, public finance, or other related fields will also be taken into account.
