East Los Angeles College, (ELAC), with an enrollment of approximately 35,000, is the largest of the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District, and is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park, in the San Gabriel Valley. ELAC is dedicated to providing the highest quality of transfer and workforce education courses, along with superior adult education, basic skills, and community service programs. The College is interested in candidates who possess academic or life experiences that enhance teaching in a multicultural setting. The Anthropology, Geography, and Geology Department is looking for faculty to join in its pursuit of student success and professional excellence.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach 5 courses (15 hours per semester).
- Maintain scheduled office hours.
- Participate in curriculum development.
- Participate in the development and assessment of Course Learning Outcomes and Program Learning Outcomes.
- Serve on department, campus, and/or district committees.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Assignment may include morning, afternoon, evening, and/or weekend classes, and may include classes on the main campus in Monterey Park or at other offsite locations, such as the South Gate Educational Center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Geology, Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Meteorology, Oceanography, or Paleontology;
OR
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology AND a Master’s degree in Geography, Physics, or Geochemistry;
OR the equivalent.
- A sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful experience in the teaching of Geology, Earth Science and related fields, preferably at the community college level.
- Sufficient expertise in geobiology and/or paleontology to teach the Earth History lecture and lab sequence required for the Geology AS-T.
- Ability to provide college-level instruction in lecture and lab classes in Earth Science, Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Geological Catastrophes (Environmental Geology), Oceanography and Environmental Science, including lecture/lab preparation, classroom management and student assessment/evaluation.
- Familiarity with contemporary geotechnologies.
Experience using technology and innovation in the classroom. - Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Sensitivity to -and understanding of- the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Knowledge of different learning styles and teaching techniques.
- Experience with the student learning outcome assessment process.
- Willingness to participate in student activities, including arranging and leading field trips.
- A strong commitment to professional growth.
- Willingness to engage in additional non-teaching activities that may included but are not limited to service on district campus, and department committees, participation in community outreach and campus in reach efforts, student club advisement, and other responsibilities as needed.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Initial placement $57,270 to $89,170 (10-month assignment). Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching history, and related work experience. Opportunities for additional earnings exist with winter and summer assignments. The district provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. In addition to the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), employees have the option to participate in a 403b plan.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and who are deemed to possess the highest degree of desired qualifications will be invited for an interview. A short teaching demonstration will be required as part of the interview. The committee will recommend finalists for a second interview to the President who will make the final recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
