Assistant Professor of Human Geography, University of Kansas

The Departments of Geography and African & African American Studies at the University of Kansas invite applications for a joint (50/50 split) tenure-track Assistant Professor position in human geography with a regional expertise in Africa. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work focuses on one or more of the following areas related to Africa: human trafficking, migration, regional development, refugees, health, and/or environmental change. We are seeking candidates who will be prepared to participate and represent the concerns of their field in a cluster of faculty from Geography, African & African American Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies, History, Political Science, Global & International Studies and the Kansas African Studies Center. The cluster is focused on migration, immigration, diaspora, and human trafficking and engaged in collaborative research and major grant projects. In addition to this collaborative work, the faculty member will be expected to research, write, and publish in their area of specialty; develop and teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels; serve on graduate student committees, direct theses and dissertations, and perform advising responsibilities; and serve on departmental, College, and University committees. Appointment is expected to begin August 2014. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in geography or a related discipline at the time of appointment. Additional qualifications include (1) demonstrated preparation to teach beginning and advanced courses in specialty; (2) demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary and collaborative environments; and (3) demonstrated potential for excellence in research, as evidenced by publications in highly ranked journals and innovative research objectives.
