The Hofstra University Department of Global Studies and Geography invites applications for an adjunct Instructor/Assistant Professor to teach GIS and Remote Sensing. Ability to teach undergraduate-level Remote Sensing and Introductory GIS courses is required and UG-level Intermediate GIS, Advanced GIS, or Geographic Field Methods is preferred.
The teaching position itself is part-time but there is the possibility of an additional stipend per semester for non-teaching technical support and management of the department’s GIS facilities and systems.
In the fall, the teaching position involves at most two 3-credit courses, each meeting twice a week for 85 minutes, and two sections of a 1-credit course that meet once a week for 60 minutes. The faculty member is also required to be available for at least 2 hours of office hours per week. GIS and Remote Sensing courses in the fall meet on a M/W schedule. Maximum enrollment for our GIS courses is between 12 and 25 students, depending on the size of the computer lab. If included in the appointment, the technical work would entail some additional, non-class time on campus each week.
The desired candidate should have at least a master’s degree in geography or a closely related discipline, although consideration will be given to those with graduate training in GIS and related work experience. Prior university teaching experience and demonstrated expertise in GIS/Remote Sensing is strongly preferred. Both a Ph.D. and requisite teaching experience is required for appointment at an Assistant Professor level. Salary is competitive with regional peer institutions.
To apply, please send a cover letter and vita with the names and contact information of at least three references. In your cover letter, please describe your GIS background, teaching experience, and note that you will be available to teach on the fall M/W schedule. Candidates who make the short-list will be asked to submit evidence of past teaching performance and three letters of recommendation. The final applicant must pass a security check and submit official transcripts.
Please email applications to: gsgeog@hofstra.edu, with the words “Application for GIS Adjunct Position, Fall 2019” in the subject line. To receive preference, applications should be received by March 25, but the review begins immediately and continues until position is filled.
