Obituary for Jeffrey Steiner

It is with great sadness we report that Professor Jeffrey Steiner, Professor and Chair in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at City College and Professor in the Doctoral Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Graduate Center, passed away on Monday 28 April following a long battle against pancreatic cancer.  He was 70 years old.  A brilliant scientist, teacher, mentor, artist, and poet, Jeff was beloved by many across the Division of Science and the Grove School of Engineering at City, as well as by many among the faculty and students in EES.  He will be greatly missed.
Jeff received his Ph.D. from Stanford University where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society.  He joined the City College faculty in 1970 and chaired the EAS Department from 1998 until his death. His work ranged from defining the experimental phase relationships of the haplogranite system to studies of bacteria-mineral interactions. Jeff was a creative thinker who pioneered new ideas on the petrogenesis of the mineral layering in the Palisades Sill and the Watchung Basalt Flows of New York and New Jersey; work he continued until his final days.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and their four children. The viewing will take place at the Michael J.
